Radio A weekend at Fleetwood & PRACC 3

April 22, 2013

A small but perfectly formed fleet enjoyed a weekend sailing at Fleetwood MY&PBC, without Derek Priestley who was on the 1st leg of his grand sailing tour of Europe (Guildford first stop) and Rob Walsh who was holidaying with his grandad the only home participant was Eric Watkinson who was RO, Scorer and all round hero for both days. Thanks Eric from all the skippers.

Saturday

The Barry Helas Sheild was contested by 5 skippers who sailed in typical Fleetwood champagne sailing conditions, plenty of sunshine, 10mph winds and straight down the lake.

The course was up and down the lake twice, great for the A class and not too strenuous for the skippers.

Dave Stewart and Neil Rothwell were both racing their new Hollom design A’s and although the usually teething troubles were evident both showed plenty of pace if only in small glimpses. This design follows the current trend of reduced weight and will no doubt prove popular.

With a small fleet there was plenty of sailing and after a great day the scores were:

1. Jon Harris 16 pts
2. Dave Stewart 21 pts
3. Martin Dovey 22 pts
4. Bill Green 31 pts
5. Neil Rothwell 48 pts

Well done Jon.

Sunday

Sunday was the Wyre Trophy and round 3 of the 2013 PRACC series.

The skippers from Saturday were joined by Darin Ballington who travelled up from the midlands, unfortunately he brought with him a gusty southerly wind and overcast conditions that would turn damp after race 1.

Undeterred Eric rallied the skippers for a 10.00am (ish) start and a zig zag course was set to get up the lake followed by a run/ reach down the lake, which was done twice per race. The gusty conditions created a few issues for the skippers and a change of main sails was in order for most after race 2 along with full wet gear.

Eric braved the conditions until 12.30pm when he called lunch, after which racing continued until approx 3.00pm at which point everyone decided that they were wet enough!

Another good days racing ended with a prize giving in the clubhouse.

The scores for Sunday were :

1. Darin Ballington 8 pts
2. Martin Dovey 25 pts
3. Dave Stewart 25 pts (count back)
4. J Harris 28 pts
5. Bill Green 30 pts
6. Neil Rothwell 46 pts

A big thanks to Eric for giving up his weekend to allow the skippers to get their A’s and themselves wet.
