PRACC 6 Manor Park- Wet & Windy

June 13, 2011

Lake at low water levels, ground rock hard, skippers tanned, Severn Trent threatening hose pipe bans, everything was in place for the wettest day of the year at Manor Park!

Those arriving at the venue early on Saturday were welcomed by sunshine and gentle breeze and the campers sighed with relief that the forecast weather had not come in.
Even early on Sunday morning things looked good with a pleasant SE mid top suit breeze. The 1st skippers to arrive even managed to rig before the 1st drops fell.
By the 1st race coats were the order of the day and by the 2nd full weather gear was needed.
Pete Moore as PRO set out enough buoys to create variations in the course as the strengthening wind oscillated between SE and E, something that was great for keeping the racing flowing and apart from a delay whilst the full size skippers launched for their racing the day ran at a good pace. The 14 skippers who signed on managed 16 race with 3 discards. Unfortunately the increasing wind and torrential rain accounted for a few, and when a shroud snapped on 190 just before the final series of races the fleet was down to 8 boats.
The racing was tight all day with 5 skippers winning races and Pete Wiles, Chris Harris and Vernon Appleton dropping scores of 6 or less in their discards. Derek Priestley (27pts) won the most races on the day (6) but was pipped to the winners champagne by 2 points by Pete Wiles (25pts) with Chris Harris 2 points further back on 29. The top skippers spent most of the day fighting for the honours but mention should be made of the other skippers who all the way down to 11th had at least one top 5 finish.
The highlight of the day off the water was probably the all day breakfast served up in the Galley which was eagerly devoured by the competitors.

Many thanks to the members of Manor Park MYC for hosting the event and hopefully they and the competitors will have dried out by next year.

Unfortunately there were no photos of the event as no one with a camera ventured outdoors.
